The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Competitors will gain the ability to challenge particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
