The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
